Steele Sailing was founded by 1984 Olympic Silver Medalist, Scott Steele. Scott, born in Newport, RI before moving to Annapolis at a young age. Scott's was born into a sailing family and began racing at age 8 as a crew on a Penquin before skippering his own boat beginning at age 10 out of the Annapolis Yacht Club Junior program.
Scott's early sailing years racing on his family keelboat, Laser, 420, many other dinghies, J24, MORC, One Ton, three quarter and quarter ton championship events, around the buoys and offshore were all apart of Scott's racing experience as well as cruising on the family boat while in High School prior to entering St. Mary's College. While there, Scott was honored (along with his childhood friend, Monty Spindler) as the first All American Intercollegiate sailors from the school and ranked as high as 3rd in the country.
Also, the two friends took up Windsurfing leading both to accomplishments in the sport. Scott represented the United States in the 1984 Olympic Games and earned a Silver Medal as well as winning the 1983 Windsurfer World Championships (over 350 competitors), numerous other National and North American as well as winning the 1990 Goodwill Games Silver Medal. Monty became a top sail designer and owner of www.loftsails.com where you can read further how the two's friendship propelled both to amazing careers in Sailing and Windsurfing.
Upon working in the industry for many years as a representative for Mistral Windsurfing, Scott also owned his own business in Florida for many years while also working as a consultant coach preparing competitors for the Olympics for the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. During that time, he also coached the Georgetown University Sailing Team and Severn School Sailing Team.
A stint with Vanguard Sailboats selling dealers 15 different model boats was followed by his entrance into the Sailmaking world in 2007.
Since then, Scott has reunited with many old acquaintances and built relationships with new customers (both cruising and racing boat owners) and currently sells multiple brands to his customers. These include several name brands as well as his own label, Steele Sails.
